Healthy Snacks
This year we are all about eating healthy snacks. Last week I provided various healthy snacks for the classroom. We enjoyed carrots, cherry tomatoes, and grapes. Also, the students came up with an excellent list of other healthy snacks. Our lunch time is not until 12:15 and a healthy snack will help them make it through the morning.

Studies have shown that students who eat a big breakfast and a mid-morning snack “attend to their work better.” Snacks are a terrific way to satisfy hunger and get all the vitamins and nutrients growing bodies and minds need. To keep energy levels going — and avoid weight gain — steer clear of foods with lots of simple carbohydrates (sugars) like candy, cookies or soda and food high in fat such as chips. Look for foods that contain complex carbohydrates like whole-grain breads, cereals, and crackers and combine them with protein-rich snacks such as peanut butter or low-fat yogurt or cheese. Fruit, vegetables, or nuts also make healthy snacks.

Birthdays
This year, our birthday celebrations will take place on the first school day of each month whenever possible. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in June. The reason for this change is due to our schedule and the loss of instruction time while celebrating. A room parent or I will be in touch with you when your child’s birthday celebration approaches.
