Parent Information

The following information will explain several classroom routines and expectations for the upcoming school year. Please take time to read this information.

Kalapuya Folders: Each week your child will bring home a yellow folder containing classroom news, permission slips, school newsletters, informational fliers, and other various notices. Please be sure to review information. All papers should be taken out of the folder from week to week.

Homework: Homework is an important link between school and home. Weekly homework will allow your child to develop a sense of responsibility and prepare for later years. On Monday of each school week your child will bring home the Monday Folder. Inside will be math fact practice sheets, reading response notebook, and a journal entry. Homework is expected to be completed neatly and handed in Friday morning. Please check your child’s homework for neatness and thoroughness. Check off homework assignments, reading minutes on the Communication Log, and then sign.

Reading Homework: As part of your child’s homework, 20-30 minutes of nightly reading is required.

  • September - 20 minutes 100 minutes weekly
  • October - 25 minutes 125 minutes weekly
  • November - June 30 minutes 150 minutes weekly

On Thursday evening, a parent/guardian should sign to indicate the total reading minutes for the week on the Communication Log, which can be found in the front of the Monday Folder.

5,400 Minute Reading Club: To encourage reading at home, our class will be keeping track of weekly reading minutes from their Monday Folders. For every 100 minutes of reading, your child will receive a sticker on his/her reading chart in the classroom. Please encourage your child to read new books that are at his/her Independent Reading level. Every 8 weeks students with 1000 minutes or more will be invited to a celebration. At the end of the year all children who have read 5,400 minutes or more will be rewarded with a “5,400 Minute Reading Club” party.

Reading Response: Your child will be asked to Stop, Think, and Respond to his/her independent reading book at home. See the yellow sheet in the folder for more information.

Journal: Journals will be kept in your child's Monday Folder. Every week students will write an entry to a family member about anything on their mind. The family member will then write back. I will only check to see if the journal is completed, but I will not write any comments. Please date each entry. The journal is a wonderful authentic writing activity between you and your child. I hope lots of wonderful dialogue takes place that might not normally happen.

Spelling: At the beginning of the year your child will be given a spelling test to determine his/her developmental spelling stage: Letter-Name Alphabetic, Within Word Patterns, Syllables and Affixes, Middle-Late Syllables and Affixes, or Derivational Relations. On Mondays your child will explore and sort a word list within their appropriate spelling stage. For homework your child will receive a spelling handout to continue practicing these words, and then asked to reflect and write about what they learned and how they can apply the spelling pattern to other words.

Collegiate Bucks: Students will receive collegiate bucks for turning in their homework on time and good behavior. Mid year, students will add up how much money they earned. Students who reach a targeted amount will be invited to “Market Day”. In addition to this special day, there will be an end of the year auction where students will spend their money.

Specials: Our special area classes are P.E., Music and Library Check Out. Children are evaluated on their efforts and participation during these classes. P.E. participation is expected; appropriate clothing and shoes are required. For your child’s special area schedule, refer to our class schedule in the folder.

Snacks: Children often get hungry during the morning hours. A healthy snack helps them feel better and work harder. If you can, please send a snack with your child.

Library books: Your child will be able to borrow two library books every week. This is a privilege that should not be abused. Books are expected to be cared for carefully while at home and returned to school on the day before check out day. Students not returning books on time will not be allowed to check any more books out until the overdue books are returned.

Lunch Cards: All lunch money should be taken to the cafeteria and applied to your child’s lunch card before 9:00am. Students may also bring cash on a daily basis and use it in place of their lunch card. I encourage cash to be taken to the lunchroom to prevent money from being lost.

School Visitors: To ensure the safety of each child, please sign in at the office before coming to the classroom. No parent or other adult should enter the room without first signing in at the office and putting on a Visitor’s Badge.

Cell Phones: Students who have cell phones are required to keep them turned off and in their backpack at all times during school hours. Cell phones may not be used in the building.
